Rind said the border was likely to reopen soon if the current discussions continued positively.

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has said the Pakistan-Iran border has been temporarily closed to address security concerns, curb smuggling and improve border management. Adviser to the Balochistan Chief Minister Shahid Rind rejected rumours circulating on social media about the closure and said the decision was temporary. He said senior officials from Pakistan and Iran were holding discussions to resolve administrative issues related to the border and that progress was being made.

Rind said the border was likely to reopen soon if the current discussions continued positively. He added that both sides were working on a coordinated system aimed at improving border affairs, preventing smuggling and maintaining law and order. The adviser said better border management could also help reduce unrest in border areas and facilitate traders operating between Pakistan and Iran. He urged the public not to rely on unverified information circulating on social media.

The Quetta Chamber of Commerce has meanwhile warned that the closure is disrupting bilateral trade and causing financial losses. Chamber officials said around 2,000 trucks carrying goods between Pakistan and Iran were stranded on both sides of the border. Traders dealing with Iran have also been advised to suspend new purchases until uncertainty surrounding the border situation is resolved.

The commerce ministry has separately directed traders to temporarily stop making new bookings for goods imported from Iran.
